Don’t be afraid of failure
On one of my drives home from school this week, I was reflecting on the quotes and challenges of my previous newsletters. I remembered that in the past whenever people asked what my greatest fear was, my answer was always “failure”. Now that I think about it, there are many different definitions of failure, and just as your goals should be SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, timing), if there is something you want to actively avoid, you should specifically define it. What does it actually mean to be afraid of failure?🤔
The other reflection I had was that I am no longer afraid of failure, at least not in the same way as I used to think. With the failure of my challenge last week, I was able to learn from it, adapt, and grow. It is incredibly difficult to improve when you don’t experience adversity. Failure makes you stronger if you reflect on why you failed and do something about it.
Challenge Update: My wife was right. I’m not ashamed to say it (but it doesn’t happen too often🤫). I made an agenda for the day before I went to bed each night and I stuck to it. I was sure to overestimate the length of time that would be required for most tasks so that I would never feel pressured by missing the start time of the next item on the agenda. Any time that I finished early, I did a few more Anki cards or rewarded myself with a few minutes on social media.
I found that I was actually much more productive using this method too because I already knew exactly what I would be working on during each time period. I was less distracted overall and had an incredibly productive week!
Results of the poll from last week: Monday is the start of the week, not Sunday!
New Challenge: There is so much to learn from books. I’ve been listening to more in my truck, but I really want to start reading more for leisure, in fact, it has been a habit that I’ve been tracking and there are very few days I’ve been able to check it off this year. This week I am going to read for 30 mins before bed for at least 4 days.

“The better you are, the more opportunities you have to turn down.” - Alex Hormozi
This is another one from Alex Hormozi as I have been binging his podcast any time I am in my truck. This was glanced over very quickly, but it is something that I have preached to the people I mentor, without ever wording it in this way. I have always said, “don’t close doors for yourself”.
In other words, don’t let someone else decide that an opportunity isn’t for you. Make it your choice. One of the ways that you do this is by being so good at whatever it is that you do, that everyone wants you on their team. There is no reason to “just get by” as it will only give you mediocre opportunities, and you might just miss out on an opportunity because you didn’t put the best version of yourself forward.
3. 🤓 Thing I Learned: We had a lecture where 2 clinicians tried to stump each other on different clinical cases and we got to watch their decision-making process unfold. Often the correct answer jumped out quickly, but it was important to them to rule out more severe pathologies quickly. This was an interesting lesson that I quickly applied to my busy schedule.
I have a lot on my plate right now, but who doesn’t? When prioritizing my day, it is important to look at tasks that are going to be most influential in my success and attack those first, just like with my future patients and addressing the most life-threatening concerns first.
4. 📚 What Marin is Reading: Fractured Freedom - Shain Rose*
She is really liking it, but as a romance novel, it took a little longer for the story to develop… it’s a grower😅
