Kaia Felt Left Out

Kaia is also an almost 5 yr old German Shorthaired Pointer. I got her as soon as I graduated from Creighton and she is the smartest dog I know. Enjoy the gallery of her. The order is going to be a little different this week, but don’t worry, you will find my favorites from the week at the bottom of the newsletter!

This week was actually rather unproductive. I fell behind on my lectures for the week and to top it off, I caught some sort of cold heading into Thursday evening and have found it very hard to dig in and get my work done the past few days.

I also came up short on the challenge from last week. For those that missed last week’s issue, I suggested a schedule from 5am to 10pm for myself to be as productive as possible. I stuck to my projected schedule perfectly Monday and Tuesday, but that’s all the farther I made it. I played hockey at 10:15pm on Tuesday night which made getting out of bed Wednesday morning extremely difficult. I frequently had work to do beyond the time that Marin got home from work, and on our Friday morning walk, we talked a bit about how much I have on my plate right now and how she knew that the schedule I proposed was quite a lofty goal.

New Challenge: Marin suggested that I schedule out my day hour-by-hour to determine what I’ll work on throughout the day. I told her I didn’t have time for that because, in the time that it takes me to plan that out, I could be getting something done. But I think it is reasonable to try to make an hourly schedule for the following day before I go to bed. I will be able to focus on my sleep and staying healthy, which should help me to stay productive all day. Sunday is an exception so I just have 3 tasks for myself:

[ ] Get caught up on lectures

[ ] Make a content schedule for the week

[ ] Finish my notion template for studying for boards

Again, we will check in next week to see how it went.

Also, just about every calendar starts on Sunday, but I mentally start my week on Monday so let’s see what the masses think. Comment below whether you start your week on Sunday or Monday!

Favorites from the week:

2. Quote: I have two renditions of the same quote. I’m not sure who was first so I figured I would include both.

Life is simple, but it’s not easy - Eric Thomas

Maybe simple isn’t easy, but it often leads to easy after all - Ron Jeffries

I really enjoy this quote as it applies particularly well to medical school but also to most other aspects of life. To get through medical school, you just have to keep up with the content. Do your Anki cards and your practice questions daily and it is in fact quite simple. But doing this is not easy. There are hours of these tasks to do daily and sometimes it can feel overwhelming.

The same can be said about going to the gym and meeting your fitness goals. It’s simple: eat healthy and workout 3-5 times per week. Sticking to this isn’t easy. This is where looking at the small daily steps can be much more fulfilling than looking at the seemingly unsurmountable end goal.

3. 🤓 Thing I Learned: You can’t please everyone. This week MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson) released a video in which he donated money to allow 1000 people to have a surgery that they couldn’t afford and their insurance, if they had it, wouldn’t cover. It was an incredible video that as of right now has 86mil views. While many of his followers have shown their praise for Jimmy’s actions, there are also many that question if he is using his philanthropic content just to make more money. It’s hard to say what MrBeast gets paid from YouTube, but it’s safe to say that this number of views could make him $1-3 million. MrBeast reacted with the following tweet:

4. Something Meaningful: I made a realization through some advice that I was giving this week. I ended up tweeting out a thread about why I feel that Marin and my marriage works so well. I had her read it before I sent it out to make sure that she approved of the message, and she said that it was crazy to read what has just come naturally to us. It isn’t something that we’ve discussed, it just happened, but it absolutely is a large reason why our relationship works so well. The thread is embedded right here if you missed it!

In my YouTube video this week, I went over some of the details about clinical rotations in 3rd year for medical students. Everyone in my class is stressed because this Friday, the 10th, everyone will be finding out where they will be spending the clinical years of their education. The process for how this is decided isn’t perfect, but I outline it in the video!

I hope you had an incredible week! I’ve been working on another project (imagine that), so look out for an announcement next week!

Cheers,
